The Client
Meg used to be a helicopter engineer and project manager. After she had her son, Will, she left the world of aviation to embark on the new adventure of stay-at-home mommyhood.
The Project
For her blog, Helicopter Mommy, Meg wanted a custom header illustration that was both realistic and funny. She sent me photos of her and her son, along with pictures of Sikorsky helicopters, which is the type of helos she used to work on. The story was all Meg’s awesome idea: the baby piloting the helicopter, with baby items spilling out, as mom hangs on tight!
The Process
Louie took the lead on the individual drawings, under my direction, using Flash. First we made sure that the helo had as many details as possible—Meg is the expert, and we wanted to impress! Then we worked on William, the cutie in the cockpit; Meg, the super determined and hardcore momma; and the teddies, diapers, bottles, and rattles.
After the drawings were complete, I placed the different pieces together in Photoshop and added the sky and cloud background. Then after a few more tweaks, we handed the final drawing over for Franchesca of Small Bird Studio (she designed the website) to add the text and install the header.
